New Goals, Baby-Inspired

I’m now 32 and we have a baby and so much has changed!  Obviously my 33rd year will be dominated by baby adventures… there will be so many firsts, and challenges, and memories to cherish!IMG_20160607_060955432

Thus when I thought about my goals, it seemed natural that baby would take the forefront.  That said, I also want to make sure that I don’t forget about me, and my marriage, and my friends in the process, so I decided to separate my 33 goals for this year into three main categories. Unexpected Luxuries (or why I didn’t get all my goals completed last year)

goal digger

A year ago things like diamonds, private jets and fancy cars would have topped the list when I thought of luxury.  Taking incredible vacations and having endless funds and not ever having to work anymore would have also been considered.  Certainly, the act of setting and completing goals wouldn’t have even crossed my mind.  It’s funny how having a baby changes everything… absolutely everything. Life Loofah’s Lost Months (aka That Time I Had a Baby)

0002

I birthed a baby y’all!  Wahoo!

These past few weeks with our brand new baby boy have been amazing and frustrating and tiring and exhilarating all at once.  And when he’s cooing and smiling and wiggling, time seems to fly by.  But when he’s uncontrollably crying and I’m in pain from breast feeding and I’m exhausted from a sleepless night, time seems to crawl.  And suddenly he’s already 7 weeks old!

We had a baby and he’s nearing the 2 month mark already!  I can hardly believe it.  It was almost 2 months ago that I went through the most pain I have ever felt in my life, and I squeezed that little sucker into this world, and I cried my eyes out and fell asleep with him on my chest.  It was almost 2 months ago that my life became damn near perfect.

Of course I have lots to do here on this blog… there are goals from last year to wrap up and I’ve got a whole new list of goals to go through and document for this year.  But for right now, I think I’ll savour this moment where he’s being completely adorable (and sound asleep) because I need to pee and eat and let the dog out and change the laundry and empty the dishwasher, and, and, and…

There’s No Time Like the Present

I spoiled myself yesterday with this most beautiful bouquet of flowers!

DSC04295

It wasn’t because I was feeling down and needed a pick-me-up.  It wasn’t a reward for some job well done or a special occasion.  It wasn’t because I’m pregnant and hormonal, or because I needed to stop at the flower store anyways.  It was just because. Continue Reading »

Feb/Mar Fitness Challenge: The Home Stretch

pregnancy yoga

According to my midwife, I’ve had a “boring” pregnancy.  She meant it as a compliment… I’ve been pretty low maintenance for her over the last 8 months or so.  Even given that midwives as providers tend to take on the low risk and easier pregnancies, I’ve been a breeze for her.  I told her “you’re welcome.” Continue Reading »

A Lengthy Architectural Read

arch enemies

Part of my reading challenge this year required that I read a book my mom loves.  I liked this category, as it took the book selection completely out of my hands.  I waited a long time for my mom to make her choice, and when she finally did, she handed me a 1,000 page tome.  Oy.  It’d been a while since I read such a lengthy novel.  But my mom has never steered me wrong with book suggestions so I knew it’d be worth giving a try!

I wasn’t disappointed.  The book is The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, and it’s got a bit of everything.  There’s revenge, murder, love, family issues, witchcraft, war, sex, religion, history, tragedy and, above all, architecture.  I didn’t know that the Pillars mentioned in the title referred to literal pillars.  I suppose the artwork on the cover should have given me a clue… Continue Reading »

Gratitude Gems: A Weekend Full of Birthdays

a birthday

Welcome to Gratitude Gems, where I show a little appreciation for the good things in my life!

This weekend I got to finally celebrate my birthday with my immediate family.  And since my brother’s birthday is just before mine and we didn’t celebrate his previously either, it was truly a family birthday affair.  Plus it was my mother-in-law’s birthday and that involved additional celebrations.  Plus plus, we also celebrated a friend’s belated birthday!  It was a weekend full of birthday goodness. Overthinking Kindness

overthinking

To my surprise, one of the 32 goals I set for myself this year, to complete 12 random acts of kindness, has continually eluded me.  To the untrained eye (you, dear reader) that might indicate that I’m just generally an unkind person, after all how hard can it be to be kind to someone at random?

Well for me, it’s proved quite difficult.

To be completely honest, I think this is all due to a mental block on my part.  A problem of semantics, of technicalities, of definitions.  It’s all in my head.   Continue Reading »

Framing Our Decor Situation

interior design

One of my favourite ways to make a house (or a townhouse) feel like a home is to put pictures up on the walls.  A few years ago in our previous house, I embarked on a risky endeavour creating two collages on the walls of our living room/front hallway.  I briefly tried out some arrangements on the floor before transferring to the wall using only my eye for leveling and measurements.  I was impressed with myself that both collages worked out and they lasted on our walls for the remaining 3 years we were in that place.

But plenty can change over 3 years, and those pictures were old even at the time we moved last spring.  When I thought about settling into our new digs, I knew that I didn’t just want to put up the same pictures I already had in those frames I used in the collages, so I made it a goal this year to update those photos before putting them on display.
